Bassett was born in New York New York and raised by an aunt in Winston-Salem North Carolina. Bassett along with her sister, and their mother relocated from the city of Winston-Salem to St. Petersburg Florida when Bassett was just five. Their father had split from the mother of their children. Bassett was in high school and, saw John Steinbeck's play Of Mice and Men with James Earl Jones and she decided to become an actress. She went to Yale University New Haven Connecticut earning a bachelor's diploma (1980) in African American studies and a master's degree (1983) from the Yale School of Drama.
